Former UNC basketball player faces rape charges

DURHAM, N.C. — Former UNC basketball player Melvin Scott is facing second-degree rape charges, according to WTVD.

Scott, 32, was arrested in Durham on Friday and jailed under $500,000 bond. His bond was modified late Monday to $200,000 secured.

According to police, the alleged incident happened Aug. 20 and involved a female acquaintance who was “mentally incapacitated and physically helpless.”

Scott played four years at Carolina and was a member of the 2005 national championship team.

Scott was employed at Voyager Academy in Durham as a high school physical education teacher and assistant coach until they were notified of the police investigation in September.
