FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — The students and staff at East Forsyth High School on Monday mourned the death of Drake Dalton Brown, a senior killed Saturday in a car crash on Union Cross Road, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

“He had a smile that was contagious,” Principal Patricia Gainey said.

Brown, 17, and Matthew Barry Jones, 20, both of Kernersville, died at the scene, Winston-Salem police said

Austin Gray Renegar, 18, also of Kernersville, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, police said. Renegar is also a student at East Forsyth.

Jones graduated from Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro, Gainey said.

Many East Forsyth students met with school counselors Monday, Gainey said.

Brown “was really engaged in the auto tech courses” and planned to go into the military, Gainey said.

“My heart goes to all of the students, teachers and staff at East Forsyth and to his family.”

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes will hold a memorial service for Brown this morning at East Forsyth, Gainey said.

Brown’s funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Kernersville, Gainey said.

Winston-Salem police went to a reported vehicle crash shortly before 11:40 p.m. in the 1700 block of Union Cross Road. Brown was driving a 1999 Ford Mustang that ran off the road and struck several cars on the private property of 1760 Union Cross Road.

Investigators reconstructed the crash scene Monday, police Sgt. Rob Peterson said.
