MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 27-year-old in Tennessee called his mother and told her he was going to be fine after wrecking his car on an icy Highway 385 Thursday  morning, according to WMC.

Like many other drivers, Ray Rhodes Jr. was surprised by the icy conditions as he was just trying to get to work.

Shelby County sheriff’s deputies say Rhodes lost control of his Ford pickup truck, which flipped — the force throwing him from the truck.

He was injured but conscious enough to dial his mother’s phone number.

“He told me he had slid on some ice and he hit the ramp and went over, but he said he had got out and he was fine,” Linda Rhodes said.

But, those turned out to be a few of his last words.

Minutes later, Linda got another frantic call from her husband that their son had died.
