RICHMOND COUNTY, N.C. — A Richmond County man is in jail after investigators say he attacked his elderly landlord with a walking cane.

WSOC reports that 75-year-old John Smith was attacked on Nov. 1 when he went to one of his rental properties in Rockingham to collect rent from his tenant, Charlie Owens.

Owens knocked Smith’s metal walking cane from his hand and then used it to beat him in the head, face and neck, witnesses told police.

Family members told WSOC that Smith spent three days in the hospital and still suffers from vision issues.

Owens was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and is in the Richmond County Jail on a $15,000 bond.
