An F-16 fighter jet crashed in the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday while on a training mission.

The pilot is unaccounted for.

The F-16, assigned to the 53rd Weapons Evaluation Group at Tyndall Air Force Base in northwest Florida, was on a routine training mission when the base lost contact with the pilot around 9:15 a.m., according to NBC News.

The jet went down approximately 60 miles south of Panama City, Fla.

Search teams are working under the assumption that the jet crashed into the water.
