DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. -- A Lexington man is being held under a $8 million secured bond on various sexual charges involving at least five underage girls.

Barry Todd Varner, 46, faces charges of statutory rape of a minor between 13 and 15 years old, indecent liberties with a minor, second-degree exploitation of a minor and third-degree exploitation of a minor. Varner’s charges total 147 felony counts.

Davidson County Sheriff David Grice says Varner lives in the Holly Grove community with his wife, works as a private internet contractor with Lorillard Tobacco Company, and works as a martial arts instructor on the side.

Grice says their investigation began in August after a potential victim filed a report. After searching Varner's home, detectives found pictures and videos Varner had taken of underage girls. They also found evidence of downloaded child pornography.

Grice says all five girls victimized are between 13 and 15 year old and live in Davidson County.

"Know who your children are associating with. Ask a lot of questions – even if it’s a function of the community that you think is OK," said Grice. "Without singling any groups out or anything – sports, youth groups, even church. Continue to ask a lot of questions, continue to question your children. If it doesn't seem right, keep asking questions."

The investigation is ongoing.
