Motorcyclist seriously injured after crash in Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Police said a man driving a motorcycle was seriously injured after he collided with a car Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem.

Mitchell Earl Smith, 65, of Lewisville, was injured while driving a 1998 Harley Davidson motorcycle in the 3500 block of Yadkinville Road around 4:35 p.m.

Police said the crash happened when a 2009 Pontiac passenger car driven by a 23-year-old man collided with the victim.

The car was entering Yadkinville Road from a parking lot as the victim on a motorcycle was headed westbound on Yadkinville Road, according to police.

The motorcyclist was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and is currently being treated for serious injuries, according to officials. Police have not said if the driver of the car was injured.

Police said the crash closed the 3500 block of Yadkinville Road for about two hours, but it has since reopened.

Neither speed nor alcohol appears to be factors in this collision, according to authorities.

The investigation into this incident is continuing. Police have not explicitly said who was at fault.

There have been no charges issued at this point in the investigation, according to Winston-Salem police.
