ANDERSON, S.C. — A SC State Transport Police officer wants to learn the name of a woman whose life he may have saved on the side of I-85 in Anderson County.

LCpl. E. J. New said he was on patrol in September when he pulled a tractor-trailer over for a speeding violation, WHNS reported.

What happened next, he said, was unexpected.

A second truck pulled up behind New, and he said the driver needed help.

“Lady gets out, comes running up to me,” New said. “I thought she was coming to ask for directions or to say someone cut her off, but she was actually choking.”

That’s when New said his training kicked into action, and the dashcam in his vehicle was rolling when he performed a life-saving service.

“I got her off the side of the road, back to the front of the car and performed the Heimlich maneuver.”

He said at first, his efforts didn’t seem to be helping.

“On the third or fourth compression, I felt her body go limp like she was going to pass out on me and I gave her a little extra thrust and, as you can see, the candy flew out of her mouth.”

After the woman regained her composure, she thanked New, who was in the right place at the right time.

“Thank you so much,” the woman can be heard saying in the video. “I don’t know what I would have done if I wouldn’t have saw you guys.”

Before New could finish the original traffic stop, the woman he had saved had got back in her truck and driven away.

“I would actually like to meet her,” New said. “I didn’t even know her name. I didn’t ask. I just did what I had to do.”

This was the second time New said he used special training to save someone’s life.

When he was in college, New said he performed CPR on a man who was having a heart attack.

The State Transport Police officer said both events have reinforced the importance of being trained in life saving techniques.
