AJ Underwood (

ONEONTA, Ala. — A 10-year-old Boy Scout who was working on a badge for knot tying died Friday night in what police say appears to be an accidental hanging.

According to the Huntsville Times, the family identified the boy as AJ Underwood.

Officials say the boy was found by his mother around 5 p.m. Friday at the family’s home. The boy was found hanging from a rope tied to his top bunk bed.

AJ was taken to St. Vincent’s Blount, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials say AJ was in the Boy Scouts and recently had been trying to earn his merit badge for knot tying. The rope he was practicing with was reportedly used in the accidental hanging, police say.

Authorities say they do not believe AJ did this on purpose.

A site has been set up to help with AJ’s burial expenses.
