MERCED, Calif. — A California man searching for recyclables in a trash container found an abandoned newborn baby, unhurt and wrapped in a towel.

KOVR-TV in Sacramento reported that the man made the find while going through trash Monday morning by an apartment complex in Merced.

The man reportedly screamed for help and caught the attention of Annette Alvarez and Jimmy Alvarez, who live in the complex.

Annette Alvarez said she tapped the baby on her chest and “she threw out a scream.”

The baby was reportedly covered in gnats and garbage and taken to an area hospital where she is doing well, according to police. Her umbilical cord was still attached.

Police later found the mother, who they said is 13-years-old and admitting to recently having the baby, according to KCRA-TV. It remains unknown if she will face charges.

The parents who found the baby said they would like to adopt her.
