WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Earning a discount for an unlimited carnival ride pass at the Dixie Classic Fair will take a little work.

A $5 discount on the $30 price is being given to anyone who passes a quiz on Winston-Salem history that's available on the city's website.

One group of eighth graders from Redeemer School in Winston-Salem was in line for tickets just after 11 a.m. Friday, a few minutes after the gates opened.

"You read a paragraph and then it asks you a couple of questions on what you read," said Meredith Brown.

Brown and her friends had the day off from school and jumped at the opportunity to spend as long as they could at the fair taking advantage of the pass.

Parents with the group thought the idea of tying the history of the city with the Dixie Classic Fair was a smart idea. Mike Nesser said his daughter leaned on him for advice on questions about the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

"I was here when they went through the process I was a Wake student at the time and got to help my daughter with the answers some so she wasn't quite old enough to remember that stuff," said Nesser.

Discounts for the unlimited ride passes will also be available on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Early evening rain didn't keep some folks away.  "Rain just adds to the fun," said Lisa Watson who came with her nieces to enjoy the rides and food.  "I'm getting ready to go kill some corndogs."

Fair officials say the first weekend is typically one of the busiest, especially this weekend with excellent fall weather fore casted.
