EAGLE SPRINGS, N.C. — More than 4,000 hogs died late Wednesday when fire destroyed a building at a farm in the Eagle Springs community of Moore County.

Crews responded to the fire at the 700-acre farm on Skill Road off N.C. Highway 705, at about 11 p.m.

According to WRAL, the 4,200 hogs killed in the fire were kept in the nursery building of Deerfield Farms. They were worth about $400,000.

Farm officials said fire crews kept the blaze from spreading to a nearby building that houses young hogs and their mothers.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
