HIGH POINT, N.C. -- From the front entrance to the roof, the historic Ritz Theatre on Washington Street is one of several buildings about to undergo a facelift.

"I have Home Depot coming out to give us estimates on what it's going to take to repair our roof, what it's going to take to repair our leaks," said Charity Jackson, a business owner on Washington Street.

Her specialty gifts store Creative Niche sits inside the Ritz Theatre which is more than 80 years old.

Jackosn and other business owners were planning to remodel the building for years but didn't move on it until a few months ago when the Historic Kilby Hotel collapsed in June.

"It was a major loss for us," Jackson said.

The walls of the 104-year-old hotel crumbled during a strorm, causing many to find ways to preserve what's still left.

"What can we do to not allow that to happen to us," Jackson said. "Not allow another death happen to any of the buildings."
