BALL GROUND, Ga. — A 5-year-old boy is recovering after being run over by his father on a riding lawnmower on Sunday, WGCL reported.
According to the Cherokee County Fire Department spokesman Tim Cavender, the father was backing the mower up when the child walked behind it and was knocked down.
Cavender says the boy suffered injuries to his legs, fingers, toes and an arm, but luckily none of the boy’s major arteries were cut.
The boy was conscious, breathing and talking to first responders when he was airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.
“I think the best lesson we can probably learn from this, especially for parents if they are outside working in the yard with a riding lawnmower, is to always look at what’s behind you before you’re backing up because it takes just something real quick like this to cause an accident,” said Cavender.
According to Cavender, because this appears to have been an accident, police are not planning on charging the boy’s father with anything at this time.
“I’m sure the dad is have a difficult time at this time, and you probably want to keep him in your thoughts and prayers because this is hard to go through something like this,” said Cavender.
