WHITSETT, N.C. -- A man is in custody after a 7-hour standoff with deputies in Whitsett.

The incident began around 9:53 p.m. Thursday at a townhome in the Ridge Creek Community on Sweetbay Drive.

Authorities say Jason Cornett was armed with a knife and was attempting to harm himself after an earlier domestic incident. Details of the domestic incident were not available.

Deputies say there was also a possibility of Cornett wanting to confront law enforcement in order to force them to harm him.

When deputies arrived, Cornett barricaded himself inside the home. Deputies confirmed no one else was inside the home during the standoff.

Deputies continued to watch the home throughout the night while communicating with Cornett. Cornett had also reportedly contacted family and posted on social media during the standoff.

The standoff continued until around 4:15 a.m. when communication ended and Cornett shut down his computer and turned off the lights, prompting the SWAT team to blow down the door and force their way inside.

Cornett was treated for minor injuries and taken into custody for mental evaluation.

Charges are pending.

There were two unrelated outstanding warrants for Cornett’s arrest that will be served after medical evaluation.
