CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is in custody for raping two teenage girls in northwest Charlotte nearly 30 years ago.

Deputies in Rowan County arrested Anthony Wyrick, 56, Wednesday on charges of breaking in and raping two girls, 15 and 16 years old, in a northwest Charlotte apartment in 1985.

Detectives in CMPD’s Cold Case Unit said Wyrick had used a crowbar to break into the apartment off Freedom Drive after the girls had gone to sleep.

Det. Troy Armstrong said Wyrick was not on their radar until a DNA test by a lab in South Carolina pointed to Wyrick as the suspect.

The two women, who are now in their 40s, were emotional when they learned Wyrick had been arrested, Armstrong said.

Wyrick has a criminal history going back to 1978, and was convicted for rape in 1988.
