WINSTON-SALEM — A transit center in Winston-Salem was evacuated Tuesday night after Winston-Salem Transit Authorities found a suspicious package.

The package was found around 8:45 p.m. at one of the loading/unloading areas for the buses at the Clark Campbell Transit Center at 100 W. Fifth St.

All WSTA personnel and passengers were evacuated.

Buses still left the transit center, but all the surrounding streets were closed to cars and pedestrians while the package was inspected by police.

After investigating, the package was “rendered safe,” by police. The process caused a loud “explosive” sound, but police say it was planned and there was no cause for concern.

The Winston-Salem Police Department requests that anyone with information, contact Crime Stoppers at 336-727-2800. We request if anyone saw vehicles and /or persons involved in placing the package at the Transit Center to please contact the WSPD.
