MARION, N.C. — Deputies said a western North Carolina woman is accused of lying to court officials that her most recent marriage was her first as they discovered she had tied the knot two times prior — and was never divorced.

McDowell County deputies said Tia Chappell, 33, of Old Fort, swore to officials on July 1 that she was marrying for the first time.

But investigators said Chappell was previously married to a man in Cabarrus County on Sept. 25, 2000 and another in the same county on Sept. 17, 2010.

Deputies said Chappell did not divorce her first two husbands before her third marriage in July.

The McDowell County Register of Deeds alerted the sheriff’s office to the marriages on July 9. Chappell has since been arrested and charged with perjury and bigamy.
