GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Renderings for the new War Memorial monument were revealed at the final ceremony for the War Memorial Auditorium.
Coliseum Director Matt Brown and city leaders called the auditoriums closing "bittersweet" as plans mover forward to build the Steven B. Tanger Center for the Performing Arts.
Coliseum staff said that the demolition date for the auditorium has not been scheduled yet as they wait for confirmation from the construction company.
The War Memorial Auditorium was built in 1959 for $4.5 million. Chairman for the War Memorial Commission Reid Phillips said the current value of the auditorium in todays' dollars is $362 million.
Each of the attending guests left the ceremony with a brick of the auditorium torn from a downstairs wall.
The ground breaking ceremony for the new War Memorial monument downtown is set for Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
