ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. – A North Carolina mother is being credited with rescuing her son’s 3-year-old best friend from a rip current in Onslow County.

WCTI-TV reported that Ashley Drummond saved the toddler as she was at North Topsail Beach with her children and another friend’s family.

The mother said they were enjoying one of the last days of summer before school starts when they noticed Mateo Lem was missing.

“(Mateo’s mom) just started praying for a miracle, because we literally we saw nothing,” Drummond said, according to WCTI-TV. “It was just water.”

The mother dove into the water and rescued the young boy after he was reportedly floating face down in the ocean.

The toddler was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and has been on a ventilator since Thursday, according to the mother. He is reportedly in the critical care unit.
