YONKERS, N.Y. — A police captain will be a guest at the wedding of a baby whose life he saved over 20 years ago, according to The Journal News.

On Dec. 28, 1993, Joseph Barca was a sergeant on the Yonkers police force when he responded to a call about a baby not breathing.

Barca arrived at the apartment and found the child’s father in tears holding the lifeless 2-month-old. Barca performed CPR on the child and saved her life.

Next week, Shammarah Hamideh, 20, will get married in a ceremony outside Chicago. Barca, now a police captain, will be in attendance.

Hamideh and Barca have maintained a close relationship over the past several years. Hamideh, a recent nursing school graduate, said Barca sends her a birthday card every year and treats her like his own daughter.

Next month, Barca will celebrate 45 years of service with the Yonkers Police Department in September.
