KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -- Students at the North Carolina Leadership Academy have more cause to be excited to return to school -- this year, they will have a playground on campus.

The Kernersville school, which started last year, recently won a national competition sponsored by nonprofit Kaboom. The prize was $20,000 toward a playground of their choice.

To compete, students had to submit a video of themselves discussing why they wanted a playground at their school. Five winners were chosen nationally, based on how many "likes" each post had on Facebook.

The total cost of the playground was around $60,000, but parents say they were able to raise the extra $40,000 needed from various fundraisers.

Parents volunteered their time to put together the playground. They anticipate it'll be fully up and running within the next few days.
