KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — The N.C. Department of Transportation will begin widening a two-lane 0.8 mile stretch of US 421/I-40 Business in Kernersville Monday.

The project was supposed to start on July 21, but was delayed because of weather.

Crews closed down the right outside lane of US 421/I-40 Business Westbound near Exit 15 around 9 a.m.

This portion will remain closed and expected to be complete by Monday, Aug. 11, weather permitting.

This work is to widen and extend Macy Grove Road from Industrial Drive to Mountain Street in Kernersville, including a new interchange at U.S. 421/I-40 Business.

The purpose of this project is to increase the traffic capacity along the roadway, which will ease back-ups and improve flow of critical hospital emergency traffic that utilizes the highway. This is the first phase of what will eventually become the new Kernersville Loop that will tie into the future interchange with the Macy Grove Road Improvements Project.

The highway will be open however delays are expected. Motorist in the area are encouraged to use I-40 instead of U.S. 421/I-40 Business West.

Eastbound U.S. 421/I-40 Business traffic will not be affected.
