ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A Reidsville man is in custody and faces numerous sex crimes and a weapons charge, according to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.

Ronald James Nelson, 43, of Reidsville, was arrested Wednesday and charged with sexual offense by a substitute parent, indecent liberties with a minor, possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of statutory rape.

Nelson is the same man who shot himself in the chest during a standoff with deputies on July 13.

Deputies were responding to his home on that date in reference to a report of a possible sexual assault. The report was made by someone who was not at the house.

Nelson was transported to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro after shooting himself.

No bond information or upcoming court dates for Nelson have been released.
