GREENSBORO, N.C. -- It's that time of year again in the Piedmont -- the Eastern Music Festival is in full swing at Guilford College.

Organizers say this year there were 700 applicants for just under 200 spots. The musicians, many who are college students, come from all over the nation and the world.

"It's a lot of variety. That lets you know it's really something worthwhile if they're coming from that far," says one participant, Victoria Fombelle.

Fombelle says the students spend all day practicing, but to them it's fun and not work.

"Almost everyone here wants to be a professional musician," she says, so they don't mind putting in the time.

The Eastern Music Festival runs through July 26. For the full concert schedule, visit

The Eastern Music Festival is one of the “best kept secrets” in North Carolina. Given that this summer music camp is probably the most competitive summer music camp in the Western hemisphere, it is surprising that so many in the surrounding community do not partake of its musical riches. If you have not attended an EMF concert, treat yourself. It might open an entirely new and wonderful world to your life experience!
