NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. — A man was hospitalized after being bitten by a shark while body surfing off the coast of North Carolina, according to WWAY-TV.

The incident happened to Carson Jewell on Saturday as he was body surfing near Masonboro Island, according to the TV station.

The circumstances leading up to the situation were not immediately available. He was reportedly treated and released from New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he received several stitches.

Masonboro Island is a barrier island in New Hanover County south of Wrightsville Beach and is accessible only by boat.
