WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man was charged with driving while impaired following a vehicle crash on U.S. 52 Wednesday evening.

The wreck happened around 8:17 p.m. on U.S. 52 near Rams Drive.

Officers say Michael Wayne Thomas, 56, of Winston-Salem was driving a 2004 Saturn at a high rate of speed on U.S. 52 when he rear-ended another vehicle, causing it to flip.

The driver of the flipped vehicle, Pearle Dealmon Rhodie, 63, was trapped inside her 1985 Chevy truck. She was transported to Baptist Medical Center with serious injuries.

The impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles.

Thomas was charged with driving while impaired and no operator’s license.

This incident caused both lanes of U.S. 52 southbound to be closed for about three hours.
