Breastfeeding in public, when to stop nursing your child and attachment parenting are all three topics that get people talking.

Abby Theuring, better known as the “Badass Breastfeeder,” spoke to WGN about breastfeeding. Theuring nurses her 3-week-old son and her 3-year-old son in public.

Theuring’s message is about promoting nursing in public.

“I’ve heard that I should have weaned Jack before Exley came along. I have heard that I am raising a spoiled brat by breastfeeding my toddler. I have heard that it’s disgusting, that he’s too old, that he’ll have psychological problems. I’ve heard that I’m doing it for my own needs and not his.”

Who cares if she breast-feeds out in public but isn’t the little boy just a little old to be breast fed whether its in Public or Private but that’s her business I reckon, certainly not mine…

  • linda west

I admire her for doing what is best for her children, I do not believe it is any one elses business. At least she does not leave them in a hot car to die, she loves her children people, lay off! And if to u happen to see this in piblic and it offends you, same on u, but look the other way!

I will never understand why people think they have a right to judge how another person parents. He’s too old to be nourished by the perfect food that was made for him? I don’t get that. I haven’t nursed my kids til three for my own selfish reasons. But my youngest will be two this month and still nurses to sleep or when she gets hurt. Do I wish she would wean so daddy could put her to bed? Absolutely! Am I going to force her to do something she isn’t ready to do at such a young age because someone else tells me I should? Nope!

2 still sounds reasonable…3 seems a bit much. Its the perfect food for INFANTS. They are definitely not infants at 3. I think bf in public is ok as long as they are respectful of others.

      • Veronica

Sadly you are mis-informed. It wasn’t made only for infants. Our bodies are designed to wean our children between 2 and 7. You should do your research before making comments J and not just write what America has ingrained in you!

I’m a breast feeding mom and I have been yelled at by other people for doing it in public I’m glad we have advocates keep up the good work

  • FaithC

She is not making a point. All she is doing is turning people against breastfeeding mothers. Most people who feel it is fine to feed your infant in public will have a negative reaction to this. This woman is looking for her 15 min. and is doing more bad than good.
I am all for breast feeding your baby, it is what is best for them. I have no issue with it in public, the baby has to eat. I am talking about baby, not a 3 year old.

haha i bet all the people that agree with this are some white trash inbreds, sick people

    • V

Funny thing…I’m not white trash but a highly educated woman and I support her doing what is best for her child which research shows is breastfeeding until at least 2 and up to 7. You however exude of ignorance. Bless your heart!

  • V

The worst part about this article are the ignorant comments. If you wish to make a comment please don’t waste the time of those us who are educated. Do your research. I know it’s a big word but you can figure it out. Why don’t you visit the World Health Organization website do some light reading and then delete your ridiculous comments. Get educated or crawl back under the rock from which you came!

  • give it a break people

Can’t she pump it and put it in a cup a 3yr old should NOT be on the baby’s bottle where is CPS

    • V

Many women don’t respond to a pump. And…CPS…are you serious right now? Certainly you can’t be that ignorant?

    • A

Why should CPS be called? Oh that’s right, because you’re uncomfortable with seeing a woman’s body being used for its intended purpose! The world health organization recommends nursing until at LEAST 2 years old, but to let a child self wean. She isn’t abusing her child, she’s nurturing him. Would you tell any other mammal, like a polar bear, that they’re abusing their child by nursing full term? Didn’t think so

  • a man

first thanks for the info on the age a child should be weaned. I had no idea they could or should be breastfed till 7. I am for whatever is healthy for a child so I am definitely for breastfeeding. However… an infant can get fussy when hungry and no matter where you are at this needs to be attended to, but as a father of 3 myself, I do know that a 3 year old can wait a little while to eat when hungry or be given something to snack on, thus giving the mother an opportunity to find a not so public place to do so. Once again breastfeeding is fine and I applaud any woman that makes that sacrifice for her children, but is she replacing the lesson of patience just to make a point. if so this kid will grow up spoiled, thinking he can get what he wants when he wants, and is this healthy?

    • V

I don’t disagree in the slightest! I don’t really have an opinion in the whole in public part simply because I can’t change that just that nursing at this age is completely normal.
