GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Fun Fourth Festival kicked off its 40th year Thursday night with a block party.

Over 90,000 people are expected to attend the two-day event that will include the Freedom Run, the Parade and Street Festival and Fireworks Friday Night.

“It's my favorite holiday," said Cynthia Given of Kernersville, who attended Thursday night’s block party. “I love it because everybody is celebrating the same thing.”

Ticket sales from the block party and more than 100 business sponsors helped keep Friday's events free.

“I love the people and the food," said Tara Ross, a Greensboro native. “Love the atmosphere and how we all come together to celebrate the 4th."

J, have you and any of the others who comment about how supposedly terrible the crime in Greensboro, ever been? Cause, I just got home from downtown (been there since 9am, for the parade), and the festival was as pleasant and crime free as most festivals are. There were way more police manning the roadblocks around the parade route and the Fun Fourth Festival than any patrolling it.

I just don’t see how y’all can realistically say that the city is ‘G-hood’, or that the WHOLE city is one big ghetto. It’s very annoying and makes you all sound stupid. Get a life!
