WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama tops the list of the worst presidents since World War Two, according to a new national poll.

And the survey, released Wednesday by Quinnipiac University, also indicates that a plurality of voters nationwide say in hindsight that the country would be better off if Mitt Romney had won the 2012 presidential election.

Thirty-three percent of people questioned in the poll say that Obama is the worst president since the Second World War, with 28% saying George W. Bush was the worst. Thirteen percent picked Richard Nixon, with 8% naming Jimmy Carter.

“Over the span of 69 years of American history and 12 presidencies, President Barack Obama finds himself with President George W. Bush at the bottom of the popularity barrel,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

It’s important to note that Obama and Bush, his predecessor in the White House, are more in the public conscious than previous presidents, and that both have governed during a time of bitter partisanship that’s made compromise between the two major political parties extremely difficult. When Quinnipiac last asked the question, in 2006, Bush topped the list, with 34% saying he was the nation’s worst president.

According to the poll, Ronald Reagan (at 35%) tops the list of the best president since WWII, with 18% saying Bill Clinton was best, followed by John F. Kennedy at 15% and Obama at 8%.

Voters are divided on whether Obama’s been a better president than his predecessor, with 39% saying he’s better than Bush and 40% saying he’s worse. No surprise, there’s a wide partisan divide on this question.

Bush left office in January 2009 with very low poll numbers. But according to a recent CNN/ORC International survey, his favorable rating now stands at 46%, up 11 percentage points over the past five and a half years. His favorable rating, according to the CNN poll, is now on par with Obama.

Better off if Romney had won?

Forty-five percent of those questioned say that America would be better off if Romney had won the 2012 election, with 38% saying the country would be worse off. Again, it’s no surprise that 84% of Republicans say that America would be better if Romney had won and nearly three quarters of Democrats saying things would be worse.

By a 54%-44% margin, the survey indicates that the Obama administration is not competent in running the government.

The poll’s Wednesday release comes as the scandal rocking the Department of Veterans Affairs dominated headlines recently. It’s the latest controversy of the past year, following the NSA snooping scandal, the controversy over the IRS targeting of some conservative non-profit groups, and the rough rollout of the new federal health care law.

The President has also faced numerous international challenges, including the new bloodshed in Iraq, the civil war in Syria, and the fighting in Ukraine, as well as the controversial swapping of five Taliban prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay for the release of a U.S. soldier held captive in Afghanistan.

“This poll gives a window into the sentiment of Americans at the moment,” said CNN Chief National Correspondent John King, who said he suspects the numbers could change dramatically in four or five years.

The Quinnipiac University poll was conducted June 24-30, with 1,446 registered voters nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey’s overall sampling error is plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.

  • seriously?

Worst president since WWII??? Obama is the worst president in history! And because he gave he created such a large welfare/entitlement crowd during his first term, they were more than happy to vote him in for a second term

    • ncturd

If you conduct a poll made up of 73 percent whites, 61 percent Midwesterners and Southerners, 66 percent non-college grads, 69 percent non-Democrats and 56 percent land-line users, you can get a Politico headline proclaiming Obama the worst president since World War II.

  • K

Obama has made history in more ways than one! Being the first black President is an awesome accomplishment… but being voted “the worst” President certainly negates the original milestone! I just hope his term ends (if not impeached first) before he completely destroys our Country. …..But…I’m not standing in the “give me free” line either. I live with, and struggle to have, the very basic necessities. However, I’m sure that the capable one’s that are soaking the system would vote for extended term limits. God help us with our own ignorance and selfishness!

    • Chucky

I guess that it works to his favor that the first black president thing cannot change, well unless they find out he’s not really black and/or American. LOL

The bad president thing depends on who is being asked and what other presidents will have done since his terms ended… which couldn’t be soon enough for me. :)

  • Jersey

No shock here…I think anybody in the United States of America who DOESNT get free handouts or live off assistance would agree this is the most accurate article in the history of Fox News! This joker should not be allowed to step another foot in the WHITE HOUSE!

  • Donnie

Obama will go down in history as the most incompetent and worst president in the history of the US. Eventually it will come out that he is not even an American citizen or Christian as he claims to be.

  • Axe Kick!

I remember folks saying polls don’t matter when Bush was in the toilet how soon we forget. Bush is the worst pres. hands down and the math backs me up Reagan follows a close second!

    • FaithC

Axe – I guess we all know you are one of the ones riding the government handout train. Get a job like the rest of us!!

    • Mark

I agree Axe, Bush was by far the worst with Nixon and Reagan nose to nose for second. However, the current and last congress are the absolute worst ever. It’s hard for a President to get much done when congress’ sole goal is still to make him a one term President.

      • NobodyAtAll

And that is all presidents should have is one term..If they can’t deliver their promises in those first four years, there should be no more..And it seems that it’s those second four years when they become trigger happy..

  • FaithC

Really? They even have to ask. The only people who think Obama is a good president are the ones riding the government hand out train.
When he was elected I said he would be a complete failure and be taken out in handcuffs. Well, he is a complete failure…I am waiting for the handcuffs part.

    • Axe Kick!

Reagan signed the biggest tax increase in American history at that time Bush raised the national debt by 300% look it up don’t take my word for it!

      • dfinch

Huh??? When GW Bush took office the debt was over $5 trillion. When he left office it was somewhere around $10.9 trillion. That’s a far cry from 300%. The numbers being used is Bush added $4.9 trillion to the debt. Today the debt is $17.5 trillion. Which means Obama has added almost $7 trillion to the debt and still has 2 1/2 years to go. You must be using CommonCore.

  • I Kill Children

This country hasn’t had a decent president since Kennedy, with Eisenhower being the best post WWII president. But that was back before the two party system and big business/lobbysts raped this country and sold it to the highest bidder.

“There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.” -John Adams 1789

  • Carol

Obama is not only an incompetent, miserable failure but also a miserable excuse for a human being !! And then, we have to think of the possibility of another arrogant TWIT who thinks she can run a government – Clinton !! Will we ever wake up ???
Will this nightmare ever end ??

  • grover

Reagan was the worst. He set forth the policies to get rid of the middle class. Trickle down economics only enhanced the rich. The poor never recieved any of the trickle down. He showed his coruptness by receiving payments from the Japanese shortly after leaving office. President Obama has tried to enlarge the middle class. He cares about all the people not just the rich.

Next worst was a tie between George Bush 2 and Richard Nixon. The only difference was Nixon got caught,

    • Axe Kick!

You are 100% correct Reagan was a Goldwater clone and he road into office on some fake strong America BS and ruined the American economy and the middle class!

  • Axe Kick!

Funny thing is many of you good white folks are living from pay check to pay check and you support the system that has you in the condition you are in!

  • Dwight

Seriously. Is this a real question. Now he is wanting to FIX immigration by executive order. I guess he will create an immigration czar

  • Axe Kick!

Truth only hurts those guilty of that truth and FOX8 will not post some of my comments for that reason but I’m not mad it make me feel good really because you are in the number of those who are guilty of truth!

    • I Kill Children

Don’t argue with the rednecks on here. There is a reason that both Bush and Obama rank at the top of the worst list, but Americans For Prosperity and Crossroads GPS keep rednecks from thinking for themselves. They just tow the line of thought like the good little sheep they are. Bush/Obama/Reagan/Nixon/Johnson/Carter. Red or blue, it’s still the same shit.

  • j

Axe u must be a black pos go back to africa if calling white people rednecks is not racist then what i said is not racist. And by the way obama is not completly black he hasn’t done anything to help this country.

  • truthjourney

This article isn’t strictly accurate. I suspect that the story is being slanted to satisfy the right-wing constituency. The question asked in the poll was not, “who is the worst president since World War II”. The question was, “Who is the BEST president since World War II?” There’s a difference between not being chosen the most as best president, and being chosen the most as worst president. Nobody was asked who was the worst president, so why is that the way the story is being reported? I encourage you to check out the findings for yourself; you will see that for most of the questions, the margins were very small. Obviously President Obama is not as hated as some of you wish he were. http://www.quinnipiac.edu/news-and-events/quinnipiac-university-poll/national/release-detail?ReleaseID=2056
