WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- A mother is accused of murdering her 5-year-old son and officials believe she may have done it for attention on social media, according to WPIX's Kirstin Cole.

Lacey Spears, 26, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of second-degree depraved murder and first-degree manslaughter.

Investigators believe 5-year-old Garnett-Paul Spears may have died as a result of Münchausen syndrome by proxy, a psychiatric illness where a caregiver makes a child appear sick by either fabricating symptoms or actually causing harm to the child in order to gain the attention of others.

Spears chronicled every moment of Garnett-Paul's life on social media up until his death at Westchester Medical Center in January.

According to Cole, Spears routinely fed her son with a feeding tube, despite people saying they recalled seeing Garnett-Paul eat solid foods. Authorities believe Spears poisoned him with sodium as many as three times in the final days of his life. The boy's sodium levels were elevated to dangerous levels prior to his death.

Authorities found search results for poisoning children with sodium on Spears' computer.

I don’t understand why some people have children if they do stupid things like this. Each and every day we see mothers hurting and even killing their children and they expect to be called a mother. You are not a mother if you can hurt your children. What happened to tender, love and care. Such a pitiful, sad world!

Well thats pretty obvious isn’t it. People like her have kids so they can slowly kill them and garner the attention their sick minds crave. Trying to understand why sick people do things is actually irrational. You are asking why someone who is mentally sick is doing sick things. You answered your own question. Unfortunately, that is life. Sick people exist, whether people want to believe it or not. It is crazy to think they can legislate or create new laws to prevent these things from happening, you can’t. There have always been sick people and there always will be. Believing somehow that if we keep pretending monsters don’t exist or lobby lawmakers to make new laws that it will change anything you are wrong, it will change nothing. Sickness cannot be deterred.
It is more rational to understand and come to grips with the fact that sick people exist and innocent children and people will be killed, everyday, somewhere. The best you can do is understand it, and protect your own from what is inevitable.

Why was she not charged with first degree murder? I would think that this fits the description of first degree murder.

Jethro, Sinner 3, Looky, Sucko, whatever you post under today, I see you were up at 3:30 in the morning posting under my name. You are more sorry then we all thought. You sit in your dark room on your computer at 3 in the morning and the only thing you can think to do is post under someone else’s name. Sorry sick little man. LOL
