HICKORY, N.C. — A former NBA basketball player has been accused of stealing gas from a Hickory gas station.

Chris Washburn, who is from Hickory, was arrested Friday stemming from an incident on May 25. He is charged with felony obtaining property by false pretenses.

According to the Hickory Daily Record, Washburn was in a vehicle that pulled up to a gas pump at the Q Express in Hickory. The passenger tried to pay for the gas, but the card was denied. Police say the driver, who was not identified, told the manager they would return to pay for the gas, but never did.

Washburn played basketball at North Carolina State University and was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 1986.

Washburn co-owned a restaurant in Hickory, Washburn’s Wings and More, which closed in 2013.
