Millions of people around the world will watch the U.S. open from Pinehurst on television next week.

John Derr, who is now 96 years old and lives in Pinehurst, was a key figure in getting the sport of golf on television when he was the president of CBS Sports.

Derr, who started out as a sports writer, including a stint at the Greensboro Daily News, covered everything from boxing to baseball to college football, but golf was always near and dear to his heart.
