Former Alamance Co. detention officer charged with assault on inmate

Reginald Lee Mebane

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — A detention officer with the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office was fired and later arrested for allegedly assaulting a 17-year-old inmate.

Reginald Lee Mebane, 43, of Mebane, was accused of using improper force on an inmate and an investigation was opened.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was asked to take the lead on the case. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the SBI, the Office of the District Attorney and the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.

Subject to the internal investigation Mebane was terminated by the sheriff. Following an investigation, Mebane was charged with simple assault and placed under a $1,000 unsecured bond.

    Improper Force. Ha …I am sure he had to use Force and the inmate is calling it Improper…What a joke.,

    I hope this man is set free and gets a job overseeing the entire prison system.

    He is the one I would want to hire for protection.

    I am sure there are times force is needed. I can’t see these inmates doing everything they are told to. The system is set up to allow the inmates to have all the rights and blame everyone else for everything and get away with it. Makes me sick.
    Sorry this man lost his job.

    We don’t know the whole story.
    A lot of teens today have NO respect for anything or anybody.
    Why was he in jail?
    I’ll bet it was not for singing to loud in church.
