MOUNT AIRY, N.C. – Authorities said three people were injured when a man accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake at a Mount Airy flea market and drove into a crowd of people.

It happened shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday at Bonnie Lou’s at 1390 Carter St., according to Surry County Emergency Medical Services Director John Shelton.

Police said the man was backing up a Toyota Avalon when he accidentally hit the gas and drove into a table and ’96 Oldsmobile. He then backed into a Ford Ranger, pinning two people between his car and the Ranger. Those two people were hospitalized.

The victims’ injuries are not critical, according to Surry County officials. Emergency officials responded to the scene, which has since been cleared.
