DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. -- The sport of croquet has been around since the 1800s and similar type games can be traced to the 1700s.

Croquet, however, is not a mainstream sport, nor is it a sport popular among young people.

So it's rare to see a young person playing competitive croquet.

Matthew Essick from Davidson County is one of the best croquet players in the country for his age and recently FOX8 found the 15-year-old playing a tournament in Pinehurst.
