WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Police said a Winston-Salem man fatally hit another man with his pickup truck and then fled the scene.

Officials said 27-year-old Travis Scott Weakley has been charged with second degree murder in the death of 39-year-old Jerome Dwayne France.

Police said the hit-and-run happened around 3 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and New Walkertown Road.

Police said the victim had been a passenger in the suspect’s Ford F-150. The two apparently got in some type of altercation prior to the incident. Details were not immediately available.

The victim died at the scene due to his injuries, according to police. Investigators identified the suspect, who was arrested shortly later.

The suspect was placed in jail under a $750,000 bond and has a court date planned for May 15.

The investigation is ongoing. Officials have not released a mugshot of the suspect.

Winston-Salem police said this is the sixth homicide of the year, compared to one at this time in 2013.
