SURRY COUNTY, N.C. -- A man was shot and killed by a Surry County sheriff's deputy Wednesday afternoon, according to Sheriff Graham Atkinson.

The incident happened around noon on Creed Road in Ararat.

An officer responded to a disturbance at the home and encountered a man in the front yard with an assault rifle.

The man made a move with the weapon and the officer shot and killed the man.

The officer was not injured.

The man shot was identified as James Ransom, 55, of Ararat. Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson said deputies have responded to numerous calls at the home before.

The suspect was said to have threatened to set traps for police in his home before, Atkinson said. The SBI is sending a bomb squad to search the home as a precaution.

There is no further information at this time.

So this is what y’all take away from the story? Not the fact a police officer was forced to kill a man today, but the use of the term assault rifle?

“assault rifle” is a made up name to imply black and scary semi automatic, or single shot weapons. The folks who first coined it cant even tell you what parts are what, but they sat around with a book of pictures of weapons and banned some due to looks, and came up with “assault rifle”.
Since this is a CNN site, can you expect less?
As far as the man getting shot….since there isnt enough information to go on, one would ask…was it a case of Mr Ransom just being a dumbass and pointing a weapon at a cop, or a case of another trigger happy member of LEO?

Before you get down on the Dems for not being as “up” on their gun nomenclature as you might be, remember that the first “assault weapons” ban was passed by George H.W. Bush in 1989–it’s 922r. And what you described was literally what happened; Bush banned imported rifles BY NAME and the law also prohibits you from assembling a weapon (including certain pump shotguns) that is on that ban list unless you use a certain number of U.S. made parts. Not trying to pick a fight, but the issue is not one-sided. Repubs from Nixon to Bush Sr. paved the way long before Clinton and the Dems ever did, so be careful with that rock if you live in a glass house.

The man made a move and some trigger happy cop shot him, what kind of move, he stood up? Is what I get from this story. Gestapo comes to mind.
