SALT LAKE CITY — A U.S. Marshal shot a man in the chest after officials say the man rushed at a witness who was testifying in federal court Monday.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office said the shooting occurred in Judge Tina Campbell’s courtroom and it was related to the Tongan Crip Gang case.

Witnesses present at the courthouse told KSTU that gang member, Siale Angilau, who is involved in the case, grabbed a pen and rushed at a witness testifying on the stand.

An FBI spokesman said Angilau came very close to the witness when he was shot several times in the chest by a U.S. Marshal.

Angilau was breathing when he was taken out of the courthouse on a stretcher, but his condition is unknown at this time.

The TCG has been put on trial for alleged RICO (Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations Act) offenses.
