GASTON, S.C. — A 7-year-old girl was shot and killed at a birthday party Saturday night when a 5-year-old boy accidentally fired a gun that he thought was a toy, according to WLTX.

Lexington County Sheriff James Metts told WLTX the boy was trying to get a toy gun out of a trunk when he picked up a real gun also in the trunk by mistake. When he grabbed the gun he accidentally pulled the trigger, firing a round through the trunk.

The bullet traveled through the trunk of the car and fragments hit 7-year-old Juliet Lynch in the chest. She died a short time later from her injuries.

Metts said the gun belonged to the boyfriend of the boy’s mother and said she did not know it was in the trunk.

Metts told WLTX charges could be filed in the shooting.
