Military releases name of Marine shot at Camp Lejeune

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — The Marine killed in what authorities are saying “appears to be an accidental shooting” at a North Carolina military base has been identified.

Lance Cpl. Mark N. Boterf, 21, of Crowley, Texas, was shot and killed when investigators say a guard shot him.

Officials said a Marine standing guard at Camp Lejeune’s Main Gate discharged an M4 rifle, killing Boterf around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Base officials say the shooter, whose name has not been released, is in custody. No charges have been filed.

The incident is still under investigation.
