PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard is searching for a man who reportedly fell off his kayak Wednesday night in the Albermarle Sound near Kill Devil Hills, N.C.

Dare County 911 personnel contacted the Coast Guard at approximately 9:40 p.m. Wednesday and said a kayaker was missing in the waters of the Albermarle Sound off Rhodoms Point.

Officials issued an urgent marine information broadcast and dispatched crews aboard a 25-foot response boat from the Coast Guard Station at Oregon Inlet, N.C. A helicopter was also dispatched to search for the man.

The Coast Guard completed their initial search Wednesday night but resumed the search Thursday morning with additional crews aboard a second helicopter and a 24-foot boat.

The 19-foot yellow kayak was reportedly recovered along with some fishing gear.

Also involved in the search was Dare County helicopter crew, a Colington Volunteer Fire Department boat crew and a North Carolina Marine Patrol boat crew.
