New Bern police officer shot, killed during chase

Officer Alexander Thalmann, 22

NEW BERN, N.C. — A New Bern police officer who was shot in the face during a chase last weekend has died.

According to the News & Observer, Officer Alexander Thalmann, 22, died of wounds he suffered when he was shot Friday night.

The suspect was also killed in the shootout and another officer was wounded.

Bryan Stallings, 35, of New Bern has been identified as the slain man who shot the two officers Friday night.

It was reported that Thalmann approached Stallings to ask questions before Stallings ran. Police say Thalmann was shot as he chased Stallings.

Authorities say Officer Justin Wester followed Stallings, who turned and shot Wester.

Wester then shot Stallings several times, killing him, according to police.
