HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. – Haywood County deputies said a man accidentally burned down the historic Sutton Town Baptist Church in Waynesville on Friday, according to WLOS.

Deputies said the fire started when the man’s burn pile got out of control and dry conditions and wind helped the fire spread quickly. It reportedly took firefighters from several agencies a few hours to put the fire out.

Officials said the 120-year-old church hadn’t been in operation in five years and was destroyed by fire.

Deputies said the fire was ruled accidental and no charges will be filed. The sheriff’s office said the man who started the fire feels bad about what happened.
