PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. — A Rockingham County family is mourning the loss of a 13-year-old boy who was killed after authorities said a deer went through a truck’s windshield.

Officials said Mason Carter died Friday night on U.S. Route 311 in Pittsylvania County, Va. near Danville.

Carter was a seventh grade student at Western Rockingham County Middle School in Madison.

“He was a good friend and excellent student at our school,” the school said in a prepared statement.

School officials said a crisis response team was on hand Saturday to respond to the emotional needs of students and staff during a make-up day.

He was a good kid and a really good friend of my dad, my brother, and myself, I’m saying this as a high school student at Dalton L. McMichael High School. My brother wrestled with him and I would help Mason learn stuff and he taught my brother some wrestling moves too. R.I.P. Mason we miss you very much.

I am a good friend of Mason’s father and know the family and Mason very well. He is the most awesome kid I have ever known. He would do anything for anybody and help everybody. He has the biggest heart and a soul of gold. He is loved by everybody that knows him. Every time I came to his house or him to mine he always hugged me when I was leaving like I was family. Words cannot express how wonderful of a person he is or how much he will be missed. My heart is broken by his passing and I cannot fathom the pain his parents and family are feeling. My thoughts and prayers are with them constantly. Please pray for his parents and family in this horrible time.
