Winston-Salem man convicted of decapitating wife sentenced to death

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Juan Carlos Rodriguez, who was convicted of strangling his estranged wife to death and then decapitating her, was recommended to be sentenced to death by a jury today in Forsyth Superior Court.

Judge Stuart Albright sentenced him to death.

Rodriguez, 38, was convicted of killing Maria Magdalena Rodriguez, 31, on Nov. 18, 2010. Maria Rodriguez was reported missing the next day and her body was discovered Dec. 12, 2010, in a wooded area at the end of Williamsburg Road. Her skull was found May 29, 2013, in the Belews Creek area of Forsyth County.

The jury had to decide whether Juan Rodriguez would receive the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole.
