CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hospital officials said an 11-year-old boy who jumped into a creek Thursday night to save his sister has died.

Officials at Carolinas Medical Center told WSOC-TV that Randez Brown died late Thursday night.

Emergency crews rushed the boy and his 7-year-old sister, Samiyah Brown, to CMC Thursday night after they pulled them from a creek off Griffith Street in Charlotte, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.

The brother and sister were in a tunnel when the girl slipped into the creek — where it is up to 10 feet deep, according to emergency crews.

Officials said Randez jumped into the creek in an attempt to save her.

Police said the girl remained in critical condition in the ICU at CMC Friday morning.

Authorities said a third person from the scene was also taken to the hospital. Their condition was not known.

An official with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said Samiyah is a second-grader and Randez was a fifth-grader at Sedgefield Elementary School. There will be grief counselors at the school Friday.
