RALEIGH, N.C. — State Sen. Martin Nesbitt passed away Thursday at the age of 67, according to the Raleigh News & Observer.

A leading veteran lawmaker, Nesbitt’s passing comes 10 days after he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

Nesbitt stepped down from from his position as the N.C. Senate Democratic leader Tuesday.

The News & Observer reports that in a statement earlier this week, he said it “has become clear that I will need to take some time in the coming weeks and months to focus on my health.”

Nesbitt served more than 11 terms in the N.C. House of Representatives and five terms in the Senate. He took the post as Senate Democratic leader in 2011 when Republicans took control of the chamber.
