Fire causes evacuation at Walmart in Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A small pile of clothing was lit on fire in the Walmart store at 4550 Kester Mill Road Wednesday night, authorities said today.

No one was injured.

The fire started shortly after 7 p.m. in the store’s women’s clothing department, the Winston-Salem Fire Department said.

A store employee put out the fire with an extinguisher before 21 city firefighters arrived on the scene, the fire department said.

The firefighters evacuated about 100 people from the store during the incident, the fire department said.

Investigators are trying to determine who started the fire.

The fire caused $1,500 in damage to the store.
