Woman sues website for using her ‘attractive’ mugshot
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — An “attractive convict” is suing a background check website, saying they used her mugshot photo for advertising purposes.
The Tampa Bay Times reported that Meagan Simmons, 28, of Zephyrhills, Fl., claims that the website InstantCheckmate.com did not compensate her or even ask her permission to use the photo.
Simmons’ attorney, Matthew Crist, said InstantCheckmate.com is using her image for financial gain. The photo is used with the caption, “Sometimes the cute ones aren’t that innocent.”
Simmons said the exposure has disturbed her peace of mind, caused her mental anguish and invades her privacy.
The mugshot was taken on July 25, 2010 in the Hillsborough jail after Simmons was arrested on a DUI charge.
Before being used on InstantCheckmate.com, the mugshot had already been used on numerous websites and internet memes, branding her an “attractive convict.”
“GUILTY of taking my breath away,” reads one meme. Others read, “This is what a model inmate looks like” and “Arrested for breaking and entering your heart.”
